Men's beach volleyball outfit: the complete guide

Beach volleyball isn't just indoor volleyball played on sand. The sun beats down, sand gets everywhere, you play barefoot and dive multiple times per set. A men's beach volleyball outfit therefore meets three requirements: total freedom of movement in the shoulders, quick drying, and abrasion resistance.

Two pieces are enough. A tank top. Shorts. The rest is comfort.

Beach volleyball and indoor volleyball: two outfits, two logics

Indoors, the men's volleyball outfit is made for the court: knee pads, high socks, shoes that grip, and a tight jersey to avoid contact with the net.

On the sand, almost none of that holds up.

No knee pads: you dive on a soft surface, a rigid protector is useless and traps sand. No socks or shoes: the FIVB specifies in its official rules that players compete barefoot, unless authorized by the referee. Support is built differently, the foot adapts.

What remains is essential: a top, a bottom, and fabrics that withstand heat, sweat, salt, and the repeated friction of sand. That's where the difference between beachwear and a real beach volleyball outfit lies.

The tank top, the reference piece

The beach volleyball tank top is the standard of the sport, for men as on the international circuit. Three reasons.

  • Free shoulders. The smash and the serve require a full range of motion. A poorly placed seam or a sleeve that pulls is immediately felt.

  • Ventilation. The torso is the area that heats up the most in full sun. A tank top releases heat without superfluous fabric.

  • Nothing that traps sand. No sleeves, no pockets, no folds where sand can settle.

The term beach volleyball jersey actually refers to this top much more often than the shorts.

What to look for before buying: a lightweight technical material, quick drying, flat seams to avoid irritation under the straps, and an athletic fit that stays in place when you raise your arms.

At LVF, two models meet the need: the Break The Lines tank top, graphic, and the Heritage tank top, more sober. The entire range can be seen in the men's tank top collection.

The shorts: the real difference with indoor volleyball

This is where the outfits diverge the most. Men's beach volleyball shorts are neither shortened running shorts nor swim shorts.

Three criteria.

Length. Mid-thigh. Long enough to cover during dives, short enough not to hinder running or trap sand at the hips.

Elastane. Essential. Without it, the fabric pulls or gives way at the first contact with the ground. A 100% rigid polyester short does not forgive the dive.

Elastic waistband. It keeps the shorts in place without squeezing, even wet, even after three rolls in the sand.

Add abrasion resistance: sand wears down fibers like sandpaper. Lightweight but sturdy shorts last a season. A classic summer short, no.

The three LVF shorts meet these constraints: LVF Basics in black, Heritage in deep colors, Break The Lines for bold patterns. All at €28, in the men's shorts collection.

The materials that make the difference on the sand

The reference blend: 90% polyester, 10% elastane. Quick drying, salt resistance, shape retention, just enough elasticity. It's the composition that best withstands a full day of play.

What to avoid: cotton. It soaks up sweat, stays heavy and damp, and once wet, it chafes. With sand stuck in the fiber, it's guaranteed burning under the arms and inside the thighs.

Two details that matter:

  • Flat seams. On a shoulder or hip, a thick seam becomes a friction zone as soon as it's damp.

  • UV protection. On long days of sun, covering fabric limits exposure. It does not replace sunscreen: the French Health Insurance reminds that you must cover the skin, apply a high SPF on exposed areas and reapply after sweating (ameli.fr).

Barefoot, no knee pads

Beach volleyball is played without knee pads. No rigid protection on a soft surface, and nothing that traps sand in the fabric. Soft ankle braces, however, reassure those returning from a sprain.

The rest of the equipment is simple: sunscreen, cap or visor, sunglasses, and a bag that lets sand breathe rather than trapping it against the fabric.

Let's be clear: LVF does not yet offer these accessories. The brand focuses on what it knows how to do - men's beach volleyball clothing that goes on the body, tank tops and shorts.

LVF x Arthur Canet - the Helios collection

A collection is coming on November 1st: Helios - Men, signed by LVF x Arthur Canet, U19 world champion and U22 European beach volleyball champion.

T-shirts, tank tops and shorts, designed for sand and competition. The brand's first athlete collection, in the Deserved it. universe.

It is not yet available. We keep it in mind for the start of the season.

How to put together your beach volleyball outfit

Three combinations, three contexts.

Hot day, full sun. Break The Lines tank top + LVF Basics shorts in black. The ventilated top, the neutral bottom that does not show the sand.

Sunset, wind or overcast sky. Heritage tank top + Heritage shorts. A coherent set, adapted to later sessions.

Competition. Matching top and bottom - in most tournaments, the two players of the same team wear identical or very similar outfits. The Break The Lines tank top with the Break The Lines shorts for a strong visual look, or sober colors if your partner wears another brand.

One rule: that the top and bottom match.

Maintaining your outfit after the sand

Sand and salt are the two enemies of elastic fibers. A beach volleyball outfit keeps its shape and colors longer with a few simple habits.

  • Rinse with cold water after each session, without detergent if possible. Clear water removes salt and sand stuck in the fabric - a rinse that limits the wear of elastic fibers (lycra.com).

  • No fabric softener. It clogs the fibers and breaks elasticity.

  • Do not wring. Press gently in a towel, then lay flat.

  • Dry in the shade. Direct sun hardens the fibers and fades the colors.

  • Never in a damp ball at the bottom of the bag. That's what damages a tank top or shorts the fastest.

FAQ

What outfit for playing beach volleyball?

A technical tank top and mid-thigh shorts in polyester and elastane. Nothing on the feet, no knee pads. The ideal beach volleyball outfit comes in two pieces: freedom in the shoulders, quick drying, sand resistance.

Can you play beach volleyball with a t-shirt?

Yes, especially during training or in overcast weather. But a cotton t-shirt becomes heavy when wet and chafes with sand. For long sessions in the sun, the tank top remains cooler and freer.

Why no knee pads in beach volleyball?

Because you dive on sand, not on a court. A rigid knee pad provides nothing on a soft surface and traps sand. Beach volleyball is also played barefoot according to the official FIVB rules (fivb.com).

How to wash your beach volleyball outfit?

Rinse with cold water after each session, wash at 30 °C maximum if necessary, without fabric softener, dry in the shade and outdoors. No dryer, and no sand forgotten at the bottom of the bag.

Deserve it.
